Attention AIT Soldiers and Families!

If you are thinking about moving a family to Fort Gordon during AIT, there are a few things that you need to know.

First and foremost, your mission is to receive your MOS training while you are here at Fort Gordon so that can leave little time to spend with your family, even if the family is authorized to move.

If the family is NOT authorized to travel to Fort Gordon, the Army will pay none of the cost associated with the move.  And, the Soldier typically has to live in the barracks the entire time, so time spent with the family is very limited.  In many cases, the Soldier then has to pay some of the cost of the next move as well.  In other words, unless there is a very good reason, families shouldn't move unless authorized to move.

If the family is authorized to move, usually because the Soldier's AIT is 20 weeks or longer, there are certain things that have to be done to have the move paid for by the Army.
  • If flying, the Army provides tickets.  Do NOT buy your own tickets.
  • The Army does not ship cars within the Continental United States (CONUS).
  • If moving household goods (furniture, etc.) the transportation office must be involved from the start.  You can't move and then ask for reimbursement later.
  • Regardless of how you move, certain documents must be submitted to be paid.
  • Do NOT try to speed things up by ignoring or bending the rules.  AIT Soldiers must remain in the barracks until 20 weeks after starting basic training, so there is no rush to get here.  Getting in a hurry can be very expensive.  Families who try to move before the Soldier even arrives here frequently make costly mistakes.
  • The Soldier's orders must correctly specify that the family is authorized to move and that the Soldier does indeed have dependents.

There are lots of rules and regulations that affect moves.  DO NOT trust the opinions, facts, and guesses of other Soldiers.  What is true for another move may not be correct for your move.  The only absolute authority for military moves is the Joint Federal Travel Regulation, which is 764 pages long.

Our relocation readiness program deals with AIT Soldiers and Families on a daily basis.  We keep up with the regulations and how they affect moves to AIT and to the next duty station after AIT.  You really, really need to talk with us before doing anything related to a move.  Our phone number is 706-791-4181.  You can also send us an email and we'll get back with you.
