Black History Month

Theme: Black Women in American Culture and History

February 1-29, 2012

Since 1976, Black History Month is observed annually in the United States and Canada in February.  Black History  Month or African-American Month was begun as Negro History Week by historian Carter G. Woodson in 1926.  His goal was to educate the American people of African-American history focusing on African Americans' cultural backgrounds and reputable achievements.  This year's theme is to learn about black women in American culture and history.

Women's History Month

Theme: Women's Education - Women's Empowerment

March 1-31, 2012

The equal opportunity to learn is the result of Title IX of the Education Codes.  This legislation, passed in 1972 and enacted in 1977, made it illegal for federally funded institutions to discriminate based on gender.  It has become the primary tool in helping to ensure women's participation in all aspects of education.  The legislation provides coverage for scholarships, facilities, and includes classes formerly closed to women.  This indeed transformed the educational landscape of the United States within the span of a generation.  This year's theme for Black History Month is: "Women's Education - Women's Empowerment"
