SCR-594 Radio Set

SCR-595* IFF Set MK III, 157-187 Mhz (I-band); AN 08-18-033, 1943. Set carried in airplanes and indicates whether a plane is friendly or enemy. Equip may be installed on ships or land vehicles, such as trucks. In such installations its operation is the same as for installations in planes. The equip does not operate at fixed radio freq. Its freq is continuously varied or swept over a range from 158 to 186 mc so that the transponder may answer any challenging signal within this range. The freq changes slowly from the lower limit (158 mc) to the upper limit (186 mc) and then returns rapidly to the lower limit. About 2.9 sec are needed for this complete cyc of which 2.5 sec are taken in sweeping slowly from the lower to upper limit. The remaining 0.4 sec is used in returning to the lower limit and is called the "flyback time". Principal components are: Aircraft Radio Receiver, Control Unit, Selector Unit, Antenna Assembly

Cur is supplied from its own gasoline-driven power unit. Set can be easily assembled and disassembled. Purpose of set is to give early warning of approaching aircraft and an approx determination of their position. Max range of 90 miles. Unit gives close approximation to azimuth of a target, but in determination of the altitude, rough approximation only is obtained since this is a measurement which is dependent upon sitting of unit and skill of operator. Approx altitude can be determined from time of detection of target continuously throughout time of approach.
